Yarn bombing (or yarnbombing) is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk. It is also called wool bombing, yarn storming, guerrilla knitting, kniffiti, urban knitting, or graffiti knitting. Tangles has engaged in the art of Yarn Bombing for 9 years. We have created 9 installations of public art. We used to use the town of Waxhaw as our backdrop, bombing everthing from trees to lamp posts. Now we focus on a wall that has been installed next to our building at the corner of Church Street and W. North Main in downtown historic Waxhaw. Julie Philip, a local fiber artist, comes up with a “theme” . Volunteers knit and crochet and help install the “bomb” We change it yearly.
